There are a bunch of stuff like this in Unity, where they come up with some new feature or part of the engine, launch it unfinished, and then you are in a limbo state for years. They should have just made 1, or like a high-end and low-end variant, but with the same API. There are like 3 render engines, all basically unfinished, and you don't know which one to use. I loaded up the default project and tried to export to HTML5 without changing a single setting, and the engine crashed. that you can somewhat customize but it still feels like the default Unreal character. But in Unreal you have default jumping, ducking, movement, etc. I want my character to have exact movement and controls that I design. Trying to make your own character controller, for example, is pretty much impossible (without rewriting the whole thing in C++). Unreal is also super rigid and you have to do everything their way. It would crash and corrupt my project just doing simple things like deleting a texture (even after I verified there were no references). I would change 1 thing in a material, and then it would compile 50,000 shaders for 30 minutes. I enjoy my time working with the editor.Īlso, while I have a pretty high-end PC, Unreal was slow as a dog. Everything loads quickly, and error messages are usually clear. That was the reason I initially tried it, since I switched to Linux a few years ago and Unity/Unreal have lackluster support.
